The efficiency equation

Alex Cornell introduced this equation to calculate your efficiency in career

PACE x SURFACE AREA = IMPACT

  1. Pace = The speed at which things progress in a company.

  2. Surface area = The number of people who’d benefit from your work

A good simplified example would be about how in big companies your surface area might be really high but pace could be quite slow. Whereas in a startup ecosystem your pace is hyper-fast but surface area will be quite small.

The equation focus on the [[Opportunity cost]] you should be aware of when deciding to work for one company over another. The time spent in either, will be relative time and not absolute time if you look at the impact you create over that time. Can compare it to [[Interstellar]] when they get stuck in a planet where 1 hour = 7 years on earth
